November 2020

At Lochgilphead High School we like to be able to celebrate our pupils' wider achievements and we have a new record keeping system into which all register teachers will be uploading monthly. From this we will also be documenting some of our pupils wider achievements in some short videos, blogs and displays within the school. These will be updated every 6-8 weeks.

Any pupils Wider achievements can also be sent to our PT Enterprise Fiona McBride at Fiona.mcbride@argyll-bute.gov.uk

Jad Walker

Jad has amazingly produced an architectural scale model of the whole Lochgilphead Joint campus! We spoke to Jad, who spoke proudly of his achievement. When asking about his model, he told us that he “likes the architecture and design of the campus, that's what inspired me”.  We were not surprised to hear that Jad’s masterpiece was a lengthy process, he explained that “(I) started in August when I started school, it is made out of plastic cardboard and I had to wait on some parts to arrive so it took 1 month to make all together”.

Jad then informed us, through great passion for his project, how he looked at pictures of the campus on google from various angles and memorized what the campus looked like, and then impressively, using his memorised images, he built his model.

 When Asking Jad what his next project may be, it's clear he already has his next already planned out. He would like to build another model of the Lochgilphead Campus, made of wood, at the nature reserve at Loch Abharain on the Canal. He hopes it will be big enough to go inside.

Rhona Love

Rhona, has recently established and become a member, with the help of local Girl Guides, of a group called “Speak Out”. When talking to Rhona about the opportunity, she exudes passion and excitement, she explains that she “heard about it through her Guides leader and that she is passionate about equality and issues affecting women”, she sees it as an “opportunity to gain equal rights for women and meet some like-minded people”. Speak Out are a group of girls and young women who aim to educate people about issues affecting their peers in Scotland. Their Most recent campaign is called “Media Mindful”, it focuses on the gender stereotypes seen in social media, and in fact, any media that children and young people may view, listen to or read. Rhona has a fierce passion for this topic and could clearly talk and educate happily all day on the topic. When asking her how she feels about becoming part of the group, she stopped for a moment, pensive and then said “ I feel… accomplished, and proud. We have created this group, not just joined it, and through lockdown where we couldn't meet up and have brainstorming sessions and face to face contact, it has been difficult, but we have done it”.

 More information can be found on the Media Mindful Campaign here;

 Rhona has also been selected to become a member of the Scottish Target Shooting’s Performance Pathways Program through Mid-Argyll Shooting Club. The program has 3 tiers which Rhona will work up through with the help of professional coaches. When speaking to Rhona about this, she said “I am really excited about this, I did a Grand Prix last year which was with people from all around the world and I really enjoyed it”.

Finally for Rhona, this month, she has also achieved 3rd Place in Girls Solo Singing, Learners Category, Under 19s, in the Virtual National Mod this year.

Due to restrictions this year, many competitions and gatherings have been cancelled, some however have still taken place online. Once such competition to still have taken place was the Mod, When having a chat to Rhona about this experience, and how it has differed from previous ones, she exclaimed “As a perfectionist, I found this challenging and frustrating, I had to re-record many times, I also didn't have my tutor for guidance” despite this more challenging approach to the competition for Rhona she didn't give up and achieved a 3rd Place award in her category. A wonderful achievement and when asked how she felt Rhona reflected “I was pleasantly surprised, it was very reassuring as it's something that I find hard but it was nice to get the validation as I enjoy it”.

 A huge well done to those who are continuing to note down their wider achievements and send them in to us.
