Developing the Young Workforce

Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Argyll is one of the regional groups across Scotland with the aim of helping young people to attain the right qualities, skills and experiences to allow them an easier transition from education to employment.

DYW works by bringing businesses in the local area together with the high school to form a team or partnership that supports young people to get together the skills they need to get ready to move into employment. They do this by taking part in work-related activities while still attending school and increasing work-based opportunities for learning on leaving school such as Modern Apprenticeships.

The main aim of DYW is to bring together industry and education by allowing industry to lead, allowing employers to somewhat tailor the needs of the local labor market, industry and the young people into education which supports the curriculum to be more work focused.

Work Experience

Work placements should enable young people to experience a relevant, challenging, enjoyable and appropriate learning experience within the contemporary workplace.  A placement should help the young person make informed decisions about their future careers.

Currently at Lochgilphead High School we offer Work Placements to our S4/5/6 pupil's in May each year.  This is done over a 3 week block. Pupils have the opportunity to go on a placement from our Employer database or can speak to Mrs McBride to arrange a private placement.  Through work placement and completing the relevant paperwork pupils can gain a Level 4 Work Placement Qualification.  In S5/6 pupils can do extended placements which work in with their studies and may be a day a week for an extended period of time.  The school is grateful for the support of local businesses and public bodies who offer work experience to pupils throughout senior school.

Employer Working

Lochgilphead High School is very grateful to all our local employers who support us and help us to offer our young people a variety of opportunities. There are various ways in which Employers can enageg with the school through Work Placement, Education visits, Workshops, Career Fairs and many more. If you are interested in working wth the school to provide DYW opportunities to our young people please contact. Mrs Fiona McBride enquirieslochgilpheadhigh@argyll-bute.gov.uk

DYW Awards

At the end of each year we present 2 DYW awards at our school Prize Giving. These are for DYW Employer of the Year and DYW Employee of the year.
