September 2020

At Lochgilphead High School we like to be able to celebrate our pupils’ Wider Achievements and we have a new record system into which all register teachers will be uploading  monthly.  From this, we will also be documenting some of our pupils Wider Achievements in some short videos, blogs, and displays within the school. These will be updated every 6-8 weeks.

Any pupil's Wider Achievements can also be sent to our PT Enterprise Fiona McBride: Fiona.mcbride@argyll-bute.gov.uk

This month we are celebrating the achievements of the following pupils:

Louise Pendreigh

Louise cycled 160 kilometres over 1 month to raise money for charity. The charity Louise was raising money for was The International Justice Mission. At the time of writing, Louise had raised over £250!

She saw the sponsored cycle advertised on a link and decided to challenge herself whilst also helping others.

Louise says that cycling to raise money "has made me feel quite proud of myself, it also felt endless!” She reflected on how it is possible to raise money for charity doing a variety of things, saying "I would definitely do more in the future".

The International Justice Mission is a global organisation who fight against human trafficking and slavery. They currently use the #justride to raise awareness and encourage people to get fit and raise money to help their cause. Euan McCartan

Euan entered the world online Piping and Drumming Championships on bagpipelessons.com and achieved 2nd place in Event 33 of the Alasdair Gillies Memorial Challenge 2/4 March- For pipers age 12 years or younger. The judge commented positively on Euan’s terrific performance, well sustained tempo and musically pleasing performance.

Euan entered the competition online because of current constrictions, all other competitions have been cancelled. These online competitions differ a lot but Euan enjoys them, saying "There is not as much pressure because you are not in front of anybody, if you mess up, you can try again, it's much more relaxed".

Euan has entered a lot of the online competitions, and is getting used to doing them that way, he says he "will definitely enter more competitions", especially because he gets to work with tutors from all around the world who encourage him and keep him up to date with upcoming competitions.

Joseph Hubbard

Joseph had a poem published on Poetry Zone. Joseph's poem is called 'The Eyes of Insanity' and was published on the website on the 1st of September 2020. Joseph’s inspiration for the poem was from two different areas, the first was poetry work that his class were doing in English, and the second was inspiration from some books that Joseph has read in the past by the Author HP Lovecraft. The tales of one character that stood out to Joseph when writing this poem were 'The Great Old One- Cthulhu'.

We spoke to Joseph about how he felt when he found out his poem was published, he said “It was really cool, I was very surprised". Speaking about what he has gained from having a poem published, Joseph said "I have gained a bit more confidence with writing poems".
